FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY - The USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships attracts the top collegiate players in the nation competing on the grounds of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center’s Indoor Training Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

With the tournament featuring the best collegiate talent in the nation and 32-player men’s and women’s draws, no player is assured a smooth path to the championship, much less an easy-looking first round opponent. Nearly half of the singles matches on Day 1 went into thrilling third sets.

The loudest match of the day was the three-set battle between Haig Schneiderman of Columbia University and Alexis Klegou of Texas A&M. Schneiderman rallied to win the match after giving up match points in the second set 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1. His teammate’s exuberant energy and loud cheering helped pull him through.

A surprising upset was Aeriel Ellis of Texas’ stunning win over Beatrice Capra of Duke 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Capra, who reached the third round of the 2010 US Open, fought hard but could not match Aeriel’s powerful strokes and mental toughness.

It was a family affair for University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Lauren McHale. She had the support of her mom and her little sister, rising American tennis-star, Christina. They cheered along as Lauren defeated Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama 6-2, 7-5. When asked whether it is harder to play or watch her sister, Lauren responded, "It’s nerve-wracking watching. I have been traveling with Christina [to her tennis tournaments] in the summer. It’s so hard watching. I am sweating. It’s definitely easier to be on the court than watching."

First seed, Mitchell Frank rolled through his first match versus USC’s Daniel Nguyen 6-2, 6-2. Frank stood in the same shoes as his teammate, Alex Domijan, did last year; both were No. 1 seeds at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and freshmen at the University of Virginia. But their first round results were very different. Last year, Alex was upset by Rhyne Williams in his opening round. Mitchell eased through his first round and he will face Alex Musialek of Kentucky in the round of 16.

Other notable and memorable matches included Georgia Tech’s Kevin King defeated St. John’s Vasko Mladenov 6-1, 3-6, 6-3; Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss defeated Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4); and Lauren Embree of the University of Florida defeated
Emina Bektas of Michigan 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. It was a consensus among players that every match in the tournament is tough.

"This is a great tournament, great atmosphere, and the tournament is tough. Every round you play someone difficult," said Embree.

Friday’s second day will feature the busiest day of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, as both the second and quarterfinal rounds of men’s and women’s singles will be played, along with the doubles quarterfinals, and consolation matches in both singles and doubles. Matches at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center’s Indoor Training Facility will be ongoing well into Friday night, and if Thursday’s results are any indication, there are sure to many more surprises in store.
