The USTA today announced that the Houston Tennis Association has been selected as the 2011 National Community Tennis Association of the Year. The Houston Tennis Association was selected from a pool of approximately 1,200 community tennis associations from across the country for its tireless commitment to growing tennis in its community.
A Community Tennis Association is "any incorporated, geographically defined, not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization that supports or provides programs which promote and develop the growth of tennis."
"The Houston Tennis Association is a role model for Community Tennis Associations across the nation," said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. "It serves thousands of youth and adult players, and we are thankful for its many contributions to growing the game. We are proud to honor the organization’s leaders and its many volunteers with the Community Tennis Association of the Year Award."
The Houston Tennis Association (HTA) was founded in 1952 as an organization designed to encourage and promote tennis in the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. HTA serves thousands of players in Houston by offering programs, leagues and tournaments for players of all ages and abilities.
HTA’s service to the community is also exemplified by its scholarship opportunities and free youth tennis program. HTA awards annual scholarships to high school graduating seniors based on financial need, academics, character, community service and an involvement in tennis. To date, the association has awarded more than $130,000 in scholarships.
The Houston Tennis Association has collaborated with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation to execute the National Junior Tennis & Learning program, which is a free youth tennis program designed to provide children with learning the fundamentals of tennis as well as the educational components that develop life skills. To date, this program has had a positive impact on thousands of children in the Houston area. In addition, HTA has developed numerous community partnerships to provide tennis opportunities for residents of all ages, including the Special Olympics, CASE (Cooperative for After-School Enrichment), Houston Wheelchair Association, and several local tennis associations.
The Houston Tennis Association will be honored at the United States Tennis Association Community Tennis Development Workshop held January 13 - 15, 2012 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, La, the largest annual gathering of grassroots tennis leaders in the United States. In addition to receiving a plaque and banner recognizing its achievement, HTA will receive all-expenses paid trips for six representatives to attend the 2012 US Open in New York City. They will also be guests of USTA President Jon Vegosen and recognized in Ashe Stadium during the first week of the tournament. The USTA will interview representatives of the organization to be broadcast on www.usopen.org during the two week tournament.
Criteria for selection of the CTA of the year award includes: History of organization, Strategic Plan, Organizational Structure, Program Offerings, Community Relationships, Fundraising, and Marketing and PR planning.
