Mission Statement: To Promote and Develop the Growth of Tennis

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis and the leader in promoting and developing the sport’s growth on every level in the United States, from local communities to the crown jewel of the professional game, the US Open.

The USTA is a progressive and diverse not-for-profit organization whose volunteers, professional staff and financial resources support a single mission: to promote and develop the growth of tennis. The USTA is the largest tennis organization in the world, with 17 geographical sections, more than 700,000 individual members and more than 7,800 Organizational Members, thousands of volunteers and a professional staff dedicated to growing the game.

Community Tennis

Community Tennis strives to grow tennis at every level with a goal of making the game accessible to everyone. It supports a wide range of programs designed to help people learn the game, play the game and take advantage of its many health, fitness and social benefits. Adult Tennis, Junior Tennis, Market Development and Collegiate Tennis, and Membership are all managed within this business unit, which covers every step along the play pathway — from starting out with 10 and Under Tennis to USTA Junior Team Tennis, no-cut high school programs, junior tournaments and junior competition, college tennis (be it collegiate varsity tennis or USTA Tennis On Campus), USTA League and USTA-sanctioned tournaments for all ages.

Community Tennis works hand in hand with the USTA’s 17 sections, thousands of committed volunteers and industry partners on numerous grass-roots efforts. This includes the largest initiative ever to strengthen the tennis infrastructure in public parks and schools, including the building and/or renovation of more than 30,000 tennis courts. The USTA is building the USTA National Campus, a 100-plus-court tennis facility in Orlando, Fla., to house the USTA’s Community Tennis and Player Development divisions.

Player Development

The mission of USTA Player Development is to develop world-class American players through a clearly defined training structure and competitive pathway as well as through the implementation of a comprehensive coaching philosophy and structure.

The Player Development program is currently based at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., and also utilizes the USTA Training Center–West in Carson, Calif., and the USTA Training Center–East in Flushing, N.Y., as well as a network of Regional Training Centers located throughout the country. USTA Player Development encompasses several areas of oversight, including coaching education, player identification and development, sport science, strength and conditioning, and player services, as well as involvement in junior and collegiate competition.

Professional Tennis

Professional Tennis manages all aspects of the USTA’s involvement in the professional sport. The USTA owns and operates the US Open — the world’s highest-attended annual sporting event — and launched the Emirates Airline US Open Series, linking eight summer tournaments to the US Open. In addition, the USTA owns approximately 90 USTA Pro Circuit events nationwide and manages and selects the U.S. teams for Davis Cup, Fed Cup, the Olympics and the Paralympic Games. The USTA also oversees all operations of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home of the US Open. Designed to operate as a true sports marketing, entertainment, and media group, Professional Tennis generates — through television, sponsorship, ticket sales, merchandising and digital media —  significant revenue for funding the USTA mission and works to increase the popularity of the pro game to positively affect player participation.

Diversity and Inclusion

Leveraging diversity and creating an inclusive environment is essential to achieving the USTA mission to promote and develop the growth of tennis. The USTA is committed to removing barriers and creating opportunities for all to participate in all that we do. Furthermore, the USTA strives to serve as a model for all organizations that aspire to achieve maximum growth potential by reaching out to all of America.
