Family Circle Cup Holds Military Appreciation Event

On Wednesday, April 4th the Family Circle Cup held a Military Appreciation night in conjunction with the Charleston Joint Base Command.

750 tickets were distributed and the turnout was great. Colonel Richard McComb, the Joint Base Commander, was present for the coin toss and had the chance to meet Venus Williams. The Charleston Honor Guard presented the colors.

USTA SMASH Zone was available for all military families and eight active duty Military had the chance to come on court and try to return Venus Williams’ serve.

Family Circle Cup also adopted the 549th Military Police who are presently deployed to Afghanistan. Supplies and monetary donations were collected, and care packages were sent overseas. USTA Serves sent two kits of portable tennis equipment so they can set up courts in their motor pool.

There are plans to hold a Military Appreciation Event for the World Team Tennis finals on September 14-16, 2012 in Charleston SC.
