TUCSON, Ariz -- Second round match play of the USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championships ended with a true nail biter in a showdown between the men of Murray Hill Country Club in Providence, New Jersey representing the Middle States section, versus the Birmingham, Alabama squad of the Southern section.
After both teams posted a 2-2 score on the board, it all came down the No. 2 doubles match-up. The doubles duo of Christopher Dramer and Paul Comer of Southern won 11- 9 in the first set tie-break over the Middle States duo of Songbai Yan and Ling Zhang. Not to be out done, Yan and Zhang came back to tie it up 7-6 in the second set after they too posted a tie break of 7-4. But after two hours and 36 minutes of this doubles face-off, it was the Southern gentlemen who came away with the win at 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 to put their team up 2-0 in the standings for the first day. As it turned out, it was not only the tightest match of the day, but the one with the largest impact in flight 7. Southern will face Caribbean Saturday at 9:30am to kick-off day two.
Overall, there were a few highs and lows of the day and some exciting moments that kicked-off the 3.0 Championships in Tucson. By far the biggest excitement came after what turned out to be the longest match and longest set of the day between the women’s Eastern team of Oceanside (Long Island), New York and Missouri Valley from Edmond, Oklahoma. The No. 2 singles match-up between Eastern’s Elizabeth Gaudet of Lynbrook, New York and Missouri Valley’s team captain Carol Reyes from Edmond that started at 7:30 am and didn’t wrap-up until 11 am, with the second set lasting two hours long.
By the second half of the day as teams got out to the courts to begin warming up for their second matches, one match-up was just wrapping –up their first match of the day, as the men’s team of Pacific Northwest swept Northern 5-0 to capture their first win of the tournament. And from there, the 5-0 sweeps kept coming in on the men’s side as the Northern California team topped New England, and the Caribbean men posted their first win of the tournament over Hawaii. While the 5-0 wins in the women’s slate consisted of Missouri Valley over Southwest, the Mid-Atlantic women defeated Middle States, and the ladies of the Midwest section blanked Northern, just to name a few. In all there were a total of 11 5-0 wins for the day, and 10 3-2 victories, for a highly competitive first day.
