Tucson, Ariz. – As matches continued throughout the afternoon for the USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championship at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona, the semifinal match-ups were beginning to set. Caribbean is already on the board, after finishing Southern 3-2 to advance. On the Flight 8 side, The men’s Intermountain squad came up big as they posted a 4-1 defeat over. With the win, the men from Boise, Idaho will take on Florida in the semifinals, after Florida downed Eastern 4-1 in the Flight 6 showdown.
On the women’s side, the Pacific Northwest team of Bellevue, Washington captured the win in Flight 2 to advance to the semifinals, after beating Hawaii 3-2.
There are quite a few matches left to be played in the women’s slate, including the women’s New England team taking on Northern, Southern California versus Texas, and the Florida section facing Intermountain.
As those continue on to vie for a spot in the semis, one match just wrapped –up where Elizabeth Gaudet of Lynbrook, New York found herself in yet another marathon in one of the longest matches of the tournament weekend. She outlasted her Missouri Valley opponent in yesterday’s No. 2 singles match to capture the first round win that lasted a little over three hours, with the second set lasting over two hours.
Today, Gaudet faced Jen Gick from the Mid-Atlantic section that started at 10:50 am (PDT) and was just three minutes shy of completing a three hour match, wrapping up at 1:47 pm. She was not only up against her opponent on court, but the grueling Tucson heat and sun. At two sets apiece, Gaudet gave it her all to pull off a comeback in a third set tie-break. But Gick held on to claim the win, and give Mid-Atlantic a 2-3 win over Eastern.
"Yesterday was more of a mental challenge for me," said the 46 six year old mother of four. "However, today was more physically challenging. Both of my opponents were great, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Overall it was definitely a great experience this weekend."
In the end, the USTA League staff onsite presented Gaudet with a certificate for the longest match played by a singles player of the weekend so far.
