INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The Southern California Section women’s team clinched the first spot in Sunday’s semifinals at the 2012 USTA League 4.0 Senior National Championships.

The team, which is based at the nearby Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., blanked the Intermountain Section, 3-0 to finish in first place in the Flight 2 with a perfect 3-0 record.

Following the hard-fought victory over the Intermountain Section, which sent her team into tomorrow’s semifinals, Southern California Section team captain Lori Romania was ecstatic.

"My team pulled it together. Everybody has played hard and been aggressive," she said. "This match was particularly tough, but we prevailed and made it through the nerves."

With their home club located just 13 miles from this weekend’s tournament venue at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Romania said playing close to home certainly helped her team.

"Obviously we’re used to the weather and we’re used to courts, we’ve played on them the a lot," she said. "We have the hometown advantage. We have all of the love and support of our family and friends. The hometown support has been fantastic."

Among the large group of local fans watching the Southern California Section women was Tommy Tucker, the famed pro emeritus who has been with the Mission Hills Country Club for 39 years.

As her team looks forward to playing in tomorrow’s semifinals, Romania said, "We just have to play like we’ve been playing. We have to play our game and be aggressive and be positive."

In other early morning results, the Northern California Section women’s team defeated Mid-Atlantic, 2-1 and the Southwest Section women’s team edged the Caribbean Section 2-1.

In men’s action on Saturday morning, Florida got past New England, 2-1 and Middle States defeated Northern, 2-1.
Sunday’s semifinals will begin at 7:30 a.m. (PDT), followed by the championship finals and 3rd/4th place matches.
