It was a weekend to remember for the USTA Southern men and the Eastern women as they captured the titles at the 2013 USTA League Adult 40 & Over 4.0 National Championships.
On a beautiful, sunny day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif., the men’s Southern team from Kingsport, Tenn., played near-perfect tennis as it swept past the Middle States Section team from Trenton, N.J., 5-0 in the championship match.
“I kept my guys confident and kept them together and kept them believing we were going to win the national championship,” said team captain James Mullins. “The key was everybody on the team pushing each other. It’s just a feeling of joy and elation.”
Mullins lost his father a week ago, but he said he felt his father's presence this weekend in Indian Wells.

“His spirit followed me. It’s difficult to explain an emotion and an experience you’ve never had before, but right now, it feels perfect,” he said. “I would like to give a special thanks to my guys for believing in me.”
The Eastern team from Harrison, N.Y., concluded a brilliant weekend of tennis action, defeating the Northern California team from Walnut Creek, Calif., 4-1, in the women’s final.
“It was great. It was definitely something we all set out to do in the beginning when we put this team together," said team captain Jane Foster. “We just really enjoyed the experience. It was a bonus just to win. This is unbelievable.”
In the men’s division, the Southern California team from Anaheim, Calif., edged the Northern California  team from Albany, Calif., 3-2, to finish in third place.
The Intermountain women’s team from Longmont, Colo., blanked the Caribbean  team from San Juan, P.R., 5-0, to finish in third place.
