It’s hard not to notice the big smile on Tom Gorman’s face.

Gorman, a former tour pro, is the Director of Tennis at the La Quinta Resort & Club, which has played host to USTA League National Championships for the past three weeks, including this weekend’s Adult 40 & Over 4.5 Nationals.

During the National Championships, many players stayed at the resort, which also was the site of the captain’s meeting each Thursday, as well as the official player party on Saturday evenings. In addition, the tennis facility at the resort was used as an auxiliary site to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for team matches each Friday and Saturday.

“We’ve really enjoyed having the group here,” Gorman said. After watching the Adult 40 and Over National Championships the past three weeks, Gorman was happy the USTA created an Adult 40 and Over division for leagues because it puts players in an age category with a more level playing field.

“I think this adds a beautiful age group. They’re enthusiastic, and they’re all in really good shape. They’re competitors; they want to win,” Gorman said. “They’re eager and excited. It’s a great vehicle, and it keeps people active and competitive.”

As a former Davis Cup captain, Gorman was asked if he could relate to the team atmosphere he’s seen during the USTA League National Championships.

“I’ve noticed the better groups out here and how together and supportive they are. But I have to admit that we’ve seen these groups come in, and they’re so happy being here, and I think even if they lose, they’re really happy. That’s the joy of accomplishing quite a bit just to get here to the finals,” he said.
