Mid-Atlantic, Northern California capture 5.0 Adult titles

On a warm, sun-splashed day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the Northern California Section men’s team  and the Mid-Atlantic Section women’s team captured their respective titles at the 2012 USTA League 5.0 Adult National Championships.

The Northern California Section men’s team from Sacramento, Calif. played outstanding tennis all weekend, which culminated with a trilling 2-1 victory in the finals over the Florida Section men’s team from Naples, Fla.

The men’s champions from Northern California are captained by Todd Stanley and features team members Kevin Vieira, Dave Kuhn, Jordan P. Boyls, and Eric Roberson.

The Southwest Section men’s team wrapped up third place with an impressive 2-1 win over the Southern Section men’s team.

The Northern California team, which plays at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club, had advanced to the championship earlier in the day as they blanked the Southwest Section 3-0 in a semifinal encounter.

The Florida men’s team advanced to the final as they blanked the Southern Section 3-0 in the other men’s semifinal match.

The Washington, D.C.-based Mid-Atlantic women’s team, which plays at the Hains Point Tennis Club, scored a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the championship over the Northern California 5.0 women’s team from Sacramento, Calif.

The Mid-Atlantic women’s team is captained by Tanja Magoc and includes team members Zsofia Jakab, Lyndall Jordan, Marianne Baker and Alicia Wise.

In other women’s 5.0 action, the Southern California Section team took over three hours to defeat the Intermountain Section team 2-1, to finish in third place.

On Saturday afternoon, Mid-Atlantic defeated Intermountain 2-1 in a semifinal match to advance to Sunday’s championship, while Northern California got past Southern California 2-1 in the other semifinal to earn its spot in the title match.
