Midwest 3.5 Senior women open nationals on winning note

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Friday’s action has concluded at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and Saturday’s schedule will be filled with key matches that will determine which USTA Section 3.5 Senior teams advance to Sunday’s semifinals.
In Flight No. 1 of the women’s division, Pacific Northwest and Midwest are tied for first with identical 2-0 records. Both teams will play two matches on Saturday including a head-to-head match in the afternoon.
"We’re thrilled to be here. It’s so much fun," said Judy Baston, captain of the Pacific Northwest team, which will face the Southern Section (0-2) at 10:30 a.m. (PDT). "They’re going to be tough. We’re going to have to take all three (individual matches)."
In Flight No. 2, the Middle States Section 3.5 Senior women’s team is tied with Northern California with a 2-0 record. They face each other at 9 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday with the winner advancing to Sunday’s semifinals.
In Flight No. 3, the Mid-Atlantic Section women’s team finished the day in first place with a 2-0 record. Southwest and Eastern are tied for second with 1-1 records. Mid-Atlantic will play Southwest at 9 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday.
In Flight No. 4, the Texas Section women’s team ended Friday’s action tied with the Intermountain Section as both teams have 2-0 records. In a highly-anticipated match, the Texas women will play the Intermountain women at 10:30 a.m. The winner will advance to Sunday’s semifinals.
In the men’s division, the majority of the teams are still in contention for a semifinal berth on Sunday.
The Southwest Section 3.5 Senior men’s team leads Flight No. 5 with a 2-0 record, while Hawaii and Northern California are tied for first in Flight No. 6 with 1-1 records.
The Northern Section men are in first place in Flight No. 7 with a 2-0 record and the Florida Section men’s team is at the top of the Flight No. 8 standings with a 2-0 mark.
Saturday’s action at the 2012 USTA League 3.5 Senior National Championships will begin at 7:30 a.m. (PDT).
