TUCSON, Ariz. -- The 2012 USTA League 2.5, 7.0, 9.0 Mixed Doubles National Championships got off to a thrilling start at the El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort as the 9.0 Middle States Section team from Skillman, N.J. scored an exciting 2-1 opening victory over the Northern Section team from Minneapolis, Minn.
Windy conditions and some early morning rain did little to dampen players’ high spirits and enthusiasm as the first round of flight matches began on time.
As the sun broke through the partly cloudy skies over the desert, the Northern Section opened play against the Middle States Section on Court 1, 5 and 7.
Courtney Norman and Doug Matuska gave the Northern Section an early 1-0 lead as they defeated David Blumeris and Stephanie Duke of the Middle States Section, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 1-0 (5) in the No. 1 doubles match on Court No. 5
"It was an awesome match because both teams were very fair with the line calls and congratulated each other. There was a lot of good sportsmanship," Matuska said following the win at No. 1 Doubles. "We were lucky enough to win at the end, but it really could have gone either way.
The Middle States team quickly came back to tie the match score at 1-1 as David Przystasz and Laura Faulkner combined to capture a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) victory in the No. 2 doubles on Court No. 1 over Tiffany Goldammer and Justen Selm of the Northern Section.
With both teams cheering on their teammates, the match would be decided in the No. 3 doubles on Court No. 7 as Jeff Wiedemann and Jennifer Rogers of the Middle States Section played Northern Section’s Susanna Styve and Chad Flynn.
In a thrilling conclusion, Wiedemann and Rogers clinched the victory for Middle States as they held off Styve and Flynn, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 1-0 (4).
"It’s so windy out here, it’s tough to play really aggressively. We tried to hit aggressive returns, but after that we played a little bit more defensively with some lobs and hoped they would make errors," said Wiedemann.
One of the keys to the victory, according to Wiedemann, was the formation he and Rogers played on court during the match.
"We have a pretty unique way of playing. We’re probably the only team out here that plays two back almost the whole time," Wiedemann said. "I think it throws the other team off a bit, but especially when it’s windy like this.  It’s hard to hit drop shots and angled winners, so it gives us a little more time to set up."
The 9.0 Northern Section team (1-0) will face the New England Section (0-1) in their second match this afternoon at 2 p.m. MST.
