The USTA Northern California Section’s Adult 18 & Over 3.5 men’s team, along with the USTA Florida’s 18 & Over women’s 3.5 team, were crowned USTA League National Champions at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The Northern California men, under the guidance of team captain Akash Zaveri, upended USTA Southern, 4-1, in the semifinals and then defeated USTA Mid-Atlantic, 3-2, in the final.

The Florida women, which went the distance under captain Claudia Eikner, knocked out USTA Southern, 4-1, and next beat USTA Mid-Atlantic, 4-1, for the championship.

“It is unbelievable, this feeling,” said Zaveri. “I am so glad that we got here. The guys showed their strengths and worked very hard. I am unbelievably happy right now.”

“Incredible, this is incredible,” said Eikner. “Amazing women are on this team. Hard work does really pay off.”

All 17 USTA sections were represented among the 34 teams that competed this weekend, a cross-section of some of the finest recreational tennis players from all over the United States and Puerto Rico.

“It was the most diverse group of players at a National Championship in years,” said USTA League National Manager Darcy Cobb. “We have seen many ages and nationalities. Mostly everyone was very kind. All weekend there was great sportsmanship and camaraderie with the players. And they were also very kind to the tournament staff. And, of course, the player party Saturday nigh was a blast!”

Nearly 400 miles away in Indian Wells, Calif., the other USTA League National Championships for the Adult 40 & Over 4.5 divisions were decided as the USTA Northern California men and USTA Southwest women earned victories at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
