An incredible weekend of championship tennis came to a close on a beautiful, sunny afternoon at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, as the Northern California Section men’s team and the Southwest Section women’s team captured titles at the 2013 USTA League Adult 40 & Over 4.5 National Championships.

The Northern California Section men’s team, which represented the Tiburon Peninsula Club in Tiburon, Calif., finished an impressive run to the championship by defeating a tough Eastern Section men’s team from East Brunswick, N.J., in the final, 4-1.

“It’s incredible. We’re excited beyond belief,” said team captain Jeff Babikian. “Everybody practiced hard leading up to this. There was a lot of hard work. Everybody just stayed focused and tried their best."

In a hard-fought women’s final, the Southwest Section team representing the Arizona Country Club in Phoenix, overcame the New England Section team from Natick, Mass., 4-1.

“I had so many people on the team that were willing to just say, ‘I will do whatever you need me to do.’ People stepped up and filled a role if they had to,” said team captain Ellen Baumann.

Baumann praised the opposing teams they played against for their sportsmanship during the tournament.

“We had such nice opponents. It was good competition. Everybody had tough matches. People were good sports, and that made it even better,” she said.
