SURPRISE, Ariz. – After 342 matches involving 62 teams, an incredible weekend of tennis came to a close on Sunday at the 2013 USTA League Adult 55 & Over 6.0 & 8.0 National Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
The USTA Pacific Northwest Section had a strong showing as the women’s 8.0 team from Eugene, Ore., edged the USTA Southern California Section from Calabasas, Calif., 2-1, in the final, while the women’s 6.0 team from Edmonds, Wash., also captured a national title, blanking the USTA Southwest team from Sun Lakes, Ariz., 3-0.
In the men’s competition, the USTA Northern California team from Oakland, Calif., capped a stellar run to the 6.0 title, defeating the wild card USTA Southern team from Greer, S.C., 2-1, in the championship.
The USTA Southern California men’s team from San Gabriel Valley, Calif., captured the 8.0 crown as it won a hard-fought 2-1 decision over the USTA Texas team from Fort Worth.
In addittion to the two women's titles, both USTA PNW men’s teams reached the semifinals. The 8.0 team from Seattle finished in third place after sweeping the USTA Intermountain team from Boise, Idaho, 3-0, in the third-place match.
The 6.0 PNW men’s team finished the weekend in fourth place after falling to a Southern California team from Indio, Calif., 2-1, in a tightly contested third-place match.
