INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - It was a weekend that won’t be soon forgotten for the Southern California Section men and the New England Section women as both teams won their respective titles at the 2012 USTA League 4.5 Senior National Championships.
The Southern California Section men’s team which plays at the Los Caballeros Racquet & Sports Club in Fountain Valley, Calif., swept the Midwest Section men’s team from Cleveland, Ohio 3-0, as they captured all three doubles matches in straight sets.
"We’re pretty excited. Everybody on our team pulled out a (win). It was a total team victory," said team captain Russ Brose. "I want to thank the USTA for making this so enjoyable for everybody. It was a blast and something everybody is going to remember for a long time."
According to Brose, the depth of the Southern California Section team was instrumental in its run to the championship.
"All of our doubles were about equal ability. There were no weak spots or superstars," he said. "We just had great depth and everybody pitched in."
The Southern California Section men’s team is captained by Brose and features Bill Hahn, Jay Thomas Gardner, Michael Mehmedbasich, Arthur Chen, Timothy Ching (Co-Captain), Tom Rettenmaier and Ronald Brewer.
The New England Section women’s team finished an incredible weekend of tennis with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Middle States Section to capture the title.
Under crystal-clear skies at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Gail Warden and Brenda Schafer of the New England Section scored a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Donna Porter and Allison Harrison of Middle States in the deciding match to seal the championship.
The New England women’s team, which plays at the Natick Racquet Club, is captained by Susan Corey and Sally Kellogg and includes Schafer, Warden, Sheila Weinstock, Kris Ikkela, Ann Knoblock, Judy Fledderjohn and Jean Osachuk.
"What an unbelievable feeling. I couldn’t be more proud of them," said Corey. "It was a great effort by everybody."
Corey credited Warden and Schafer for coming through a tough match in the No. 3 doubles.
"They had a lot of pressure on them in the last match with everybody watching, but they’re a good team and they played well together and were able to pull it out."
