TUCSON, Ariz. — Day 2 of the 2012 USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships is underway at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center.
The 7:30 a.m. matches have now concluded with some teams holding strong, while some faltered for the first time this weekend.
The women of the Texas section lost their first event of the weekend to the Pacific Northwest section 4-1. The ladies from Portland, Ore., were anchored by the singles play of Ellen Bowman, who is undefeated this weekend. She took her No. 1 singles match against Texas’s Donna Overly in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Bowman’s teammate Roxy Miller, who is five months pregnant, won her tightly contested No. 2 singles match against Shannon Bailey of Texas in a three-set tiebreak 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11). Bailey was previously undefeated in singles play.
Miller became emotional after the match finished, but she said her emotions were a product of her pregnancy.
"I’m very hormonal, so it was quite the struggle for me just because I’m not as fit," she said. "I’m five months pregnant. Any other day when I’m not pregnant, I wouldn’t be like that."
In the tiebreak, Miller knew she had to keep calm, as she credited Bailey as a "very smart and consistent individual."
"I had a mantra," Miller said. "Keep your eye on the ball, take it slow, nice and easy."
On the surrounding courts, the Midwest women had a strong showing against the Northern women, winning 4-1. The women from Detroit swept all three doubles matches in straight sets.
The Caribbean women improved to 2-0 on the weekend with a 3-2 victory over the women from Hawaii.
Also undefeated are the Texas men with their commanding 4-1 win over the Missouri Valley men. The men from the Intermountain section also came away with an early morning win against Northern 3-2.
Please check back for more updates throughout the day.
