Innovation: Young Professional Tennis Mixer

Rationale: Tennis participation drops off in the 21-30 age group. While some in that age group do get involved in league play, few find players in their own age range at a time when the social aspects of tennis could be a significant draw. A tennis mixer for the under-30 crowd provides for:

  •  Social interaction among the post-college to 30-year-olds;
  • Round-robin play, with food, drink and awards;
  • Use of courts during a typically slow time (Friday nights, for example)

Proven where: Philadelphia Area Tennis District

Quote from the innovator:  “We charged $5 per player, organized the round robin and bought food and awards for the participants. We were able to get free courts, but if we had to pay for court time, we would simply have charged a higher participation fee.

“We used Facebook as our main marketing device and attracted about 25 people to our first event, but we now have more than 80 people interested. To follow up, we created a group so that people could play in between our events. We hold a mixer every couple of months.”
