Technique: Video Analysis for Tennis

(The information in this article was taken or adapted from the High Performance Coaching Program Study Guide.)

How many times have you wished you could compare a player's technique today to what they were doing two months ago or even two years ago?  It would be great to have a tool that would allow you to save video clips of your players and use them to assess technique changes or changes in game strategy.  There are several relatively new video analysis systems that now available to help you do this.

The USTA Training Center Headquarters and Regional Training Centers (RTC's) around the country use the Dartfish Video Analysis system to analyze player technique and supply content for our video library.  Now players who attend national camps in Boca Raton or RTC Camps can see what they look like when they play and how their technique matures over time.

As we continue to build a video library, we will also be able to compare one player's technique against the best players in the world using split-screen technology that allows two videos to be synchronized and displayed on a video monitor at the same time.  Video analysis is not something that is restricted to the USTA; this is a tool that almost every coach can use as well.  If you are interested in learning more about performing video analyses on your players, please contact David Ramos (ramos@usta.com).
