Florida and Pacific Northwest bring home wins at 4.0 Adult National Championships

Ft. Lauderdale and Seattle captured the national titles at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 4.0 Adult National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona

The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. women’s team, representing USTA Florida, defeated a team from Sacramento, 3-2, in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Ft. Lauderdale team defeated a team from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 4-1, while Sacramento topped Los Angeles, 5-0 in the semifinals.

The Ft. Lauderdale team is captained by Andrea Derby and features Beverly Norona, Dolly Rump, Darcy Hayes, Karen Novick, Marly Garcia, Linda Mulklevicz, Elaine Brett, Linda Anderson, Gwen Tower, Adriana Aray, Barbara Clabby, Sharon Vonstrolley and Vivian Fernandez.

In the third place playoff match, Los Angeles defeated Poughkeepsie, 4-1.

The Seattle men’s team, representing USTA Pacific Northwest, defeated a team from Irvine, Calif., 4-1 in the Championship match. In the morning semifinals, Seattle swept a team from Mountain View, Calif., 5-0 in the semifinals. On the other half of the draw, Irvine, Calif. defeated Washington, D.C., 4-1.

The Seattle team is captained by Robert Chung and features Josh Berger, Rolf Bjorn Hyllseth, Marcus Rose, Tim Hunter, Brad Dilling, Pablo Ramirez, Steve Fong, Albert Lu, Matt Richter, Frank Sun and Corey Cheng.

Washington, D.C. edged Mountain View, for third place, 3-2.

Each semifinalist advanced to the championship round by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

This year’s USTA League presented by Chrysler 4.0 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 34 teams (17 men’s and 17 women’s) from throughout the nation.

The USTA League program celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2005. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 665,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.

Chrysler is entering its third year as the presenting sponsor and official vehicle of USTA League. Head Penn Racquet Sports is in its 21st year as official ball of USTA League.
