Play Has Begun

Play has finally begun in Tucson, unfortunately it isn't tennis, but rather table tennis.

We have been hit with a very uncharacteristic rain storm here in the desert and play has been delayed almost two hours. In fact, no matches have even been sent to the courts yet.

So how are the players occupying their time? For some, like NorCal's Stanley Chang and Johnny Liu, it means getting a little table tennis practice in.

“This is great,” said Chang, who fell in a tight match to his buddy on one of the four tables here at the Randolph Tennis Center. “Table tennis is good practice and it keeps us relaxed. Anyway, I'd rather warm-up here than on the real courts because they still look slippery.”

This is Chang's first time to nationals and the Bay Area resident couldn't be happier.

“I am excited,” said Chang. “This year we really didn't know what type of team we had. We were actually surprised to make it past District and then to here. We still aren't sure what's going to happen. We may do well or get taught a lesson out there.”

“We formed this team about three years ago. Last year we won the section 7.5 Combo Championships.”

It seems like people have been Squeegee-ing the courts all day. But play may be starting soon.

“This is extremely uncharacteristic here here,” said Anne Lane of all the rain we have seen this morning. Anne is in charge of uploading the scores to TennisLink here this weekend and hails from Tucson. “It has been four or five years since we've had a rain delay here.”
