Since 2003, Bob and Mike Bryan have been two bedrocks of the U.S. Davis Cup team, answering the call time and again to compete for their country, doing so with pride and always bringing their best tennis, including clinching the 2007 Davis Cup title for the U.S.
For their efforts and dedication, the world No. 1s and arguably the greatest doubles team in history were honored with Davis Cup Commitment Awards on the final day of the 2013 U.S. vs. Serbia Davis Cup Quarterfinal in Boise, Idaho.
"It is an honor. Davis Cup has been a big part of our career and our lives," Bob Bryan said. "Thanks to our dad, our great coaches and all our teammates. We love it, and especially thanks to all the fans."
This new award is part of the ITF’s 2013 Centenary celebrations, and was presented to Davis Cup players who have shown a longstanding dedication to representing their country. Each award recipient had to have competed in a minimum of 20 ties.
The 13-time Grand Slam champion twins from Camarillo, Calif., are 20-4 together in their prestigious Davis Cup careers. They defeated Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in the 2007 final in straight sets for the clinching win.
The Bryan brothers saw Davis Cup competition for the first time in 1990 when their father, Wayne Bryan, brought them to a first-round tie between the U.S. and Mexico to watch the doubles match featuring Americans Rick Leach and Jim Pugh, who clinched the tie for the U.S. over Leonardo Lavalle and Jorge Lozano.
They were hooked on Davis Cup and more crazy about tennis from that moment and said that to have been able to be part of it themselves and to be recognized is very special.
"We were inspired to play Davis Cup when we were 10 years old," Mike Bryan said. "We are very lucky to play for our country."
