The U.S. Fed Cup team will kick off its 2015 season – and its campaign to return to the prestigious World Group – on the road against Argentina.

After falling in the World Group Play-offs to France in April, the U.S. was relegated to World Group II play for 2015. It is just the second time in its history that the 17-time Fed Cup champion U.S. has not participated in the World Group.

In order to return to the World Group and earn a chance to compete for the Fed Cup title in 2016, the U.S. must win its World Group First Round tie against Argentina and then win a subsequent World Group Play-off against an opponent to be determined.

The tie against Argentina will be played Feb. 7-8, with the exact location yet to be determined. Players for the tie will be named no less than 10 days prior to the start of competition.

If the U.S. defeats Argentina, the World Group Play-off will be held April 18-19. If the Americans lose, they will compete in the World Group II Play-off in April to remain in World Group II for 2016.

The U.S. holds a 3-1 record over Argentina in Fed Cup play. The last matchup between the two countries was in the 2009 World Group Quarterfinal in Surprise, Ariz., where the Americans came away with a 3-2 victory. The U.S. also won in 1985 (in Japan) and in 1964 (in Philadelphia) but lost to Argentina in 1993 (in Germany).

Those who competed for the U.S. Fed Cup team in 2014 include world No. 19 Sloane Stephens, No. 40 Madison Keys and Top 70 players Christina McHale, Alison Riske and Lauren Davis. Argentina’s top players are No. 75 Paula Ormaechea and No. 160 Maria Irigoyen.
