Emirates Airline US Open Series kicks off with BB&T Atlanta Open

Serena Williams will kick off her Emirates Airline US Open Series campaign next week at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif.

The 2014 Emirates Airline US Open Series officially kicks off this its 11th season this week with the BB&T Atlanta Open, once again linking eight North American hard-court tournaments to the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open.

Defending champion and world No. 12 John Isner of the United States, 2013 finalist and No. 17 Kevin Anderson of South Africa and reigning Wimbledon doubles champion Vasek Pospisil of Canada headline the field this year in Atlanta. Isner, in fact, has committed to play in all five men's Series events this year.

“It's been a stretch of the season where in the past I've done extremely well, and it's sort of helped my season out quite a bit,” Isner told the ATP website. “The main goal is you want to play a lot of matches. You want to win a lot of matches.”

The first women’s event of the Series kicks off next week with the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif. The tournament features a star-studded lineup that includes world No. 1 Serena Williams, reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic and two-time US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

The Series enables tennis fans to see the world’s best players in action from coast to coast. The men’s events for the Series will be held in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Cincinnati and Winston-Salem, N.C. The women’s events will be held in Stanford, Calif.; Montreal; Cincinnati; and New Haven, Conn.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick are among the men who have captured the Series crown, while the women’s champions include Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

With 200 of the game’s top players competing for more than $40 million in prize money, the Emirates Airline US Open Series awards bonus points based on performance at each of its events. The top three men’s and top three women’s finishers all earn the opportunity to compete for bonus prize money at the US Open, with the champions of the Series Bonus Challenge having the opportunity to win $1 million in bonus prize money in Flushing Meadows.
