SEGGERMAN, KUNG WIN 18s NATIONAL WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sally Milano | January 03, 2017

The new year started on a positive note for 17-year-old Ryan Seggerman and 16-year-old Chelsea Kung, as the two top young juniors won the USTA National Winter Championships Boys’ and Girls’ 18s singles titles last week in Scottsdale, Ariz. With their victories, the players earned wild-card entries into future USTA Pro Circuit events.

Seggerman (pictured above), a Princeton recruit from Coronado, Calif., is ranked in the Top 20 of both the USTA Boys’ 18s National Standings and TennisRecruiting.net’s Class of 2017 national prospect rankings. He defeated 17-year-old Robert Maciag of Sterling, Va., 7-5, 7-5, to capture the Boys' 18s championship.

Kung, a high school sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, is the ninth-ranked prospect in the USTA Girls’ 16s national standings. She beat Abigail Forbes, 15, of Raleigh, N.C., 6-1, 6-3, to win the Girls’ 18s title.

The National Winter Championships consisted of 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams in the 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s age divisions. The tournament was played on outdoor hard courts at Scottsdale Ranch Park (18s and 16s) and the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. (14s and 12s).

In the 16s age division, the No. 1 seeds each took home the boys’ and girls’ singles titles. Fifteen-year-old Brandon Nakashima of San Diego beat Atlanta’s Tyler Stice, 6-2, 6-4, to capture the Boys’ 16s championship. Angelica Blake, a 16-year-old from Boca Raton, Fla., beat No. 4 seed Dasha Kourkina, a 15-year-old from Brooklyn, N.Y., 7-6 (4), 6-0, to claim the girls’ singles title.

In the 14s, top seed Maxwell McKennon, 14, from Newport Beach, Calif., nearly swept the boys' singles and doubles titles, defeating No. 3 seed Matthew Robinson, a 14-year-old from Wynnewood, Pa., to win the singles title and finishing runner-up in doubles. Fourteen-year-old Jenna DeFalco, the No. 5 seed from Tustin, Calif., turned in the same result in the Girls’ 14s, beating 12-year-old Katja Wiersholm of Kirkland, Wash., 6-3, 6-3, in the singles final and also advancing to the doubles final.

Twelve-year-old Vivian Ovrootsky of San Jose, Calif., was the only player in any age group to sweep the singles and doubles titles, taking the Girls' 12s singles title with a 6-1, 6-2 win over 12-year-old Matilyn Wang of Scottsdale, Ariz., and teaming with Anushka Khune of Palo Alto, Calif., to win the doubles crown.

The Boys' 12s singles title went to top seed Jackson Armistead of Hilton Head Island, S.C., with the 12-year-old beating No. 7 seed Learner Tien, 11, from Irvine, Calif., 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5), for the championship.
