High School No-Cut Coach Advisory Team

The USTA has established an advisory team of experienced and successful no-cut high school coaches who can offer advice to coaches who are challenged by obstacles they face with implementing a no-cut team. Meet our stellar team of coaches and learn their secrets for providing successful practices and matches for all the players on their teams.

Dave Steinbach

Dave Steinbach - Brookfield, WI

This experienced coach has had success for 35 years at Brookfield Central High School. This spring Dave is working with 95 boys and last fall 110 girls finished the season. Every player practices and plays in interscholastic duel matches and weekend tournaments. Since Dave took over the tennis program in 1982, his teams have won four boys' state team titles and five state team runner-up titles. Dave has been honored five times as the USPTA Midwest Coach of the year and was the National High School Coach of the Year in 2002.

Dave offers five secrets to success: Have fun, be fair and give equal importance to all levels of the program, Develop TEAM aspects, stress mental toughness training aspects and strategies in match play, and parent and family involvement.

HS Advisory Committee - Tiger Teusink

Tiger Teusink - Holland, Michigan

Tiger has coached tennis for 42 years with 34 years at Holland High School. He averaged 48-50 players on each of the boys and girls squads and his teams won 78% of matches played. All members of his JV teams played at least one set in each match. Added to a 27-year basketball-coaching career, he is also a certified PTR professional, college coach and previous tennis club manager and teaching professional.

Tiger's tip for successful practices: Set up players in a group of 10-12 per court with a varsity player as the leader to run the Control Drill. He also recommends staggered practice times to accommodate all players.

High School Advisory Committee - Sarah Miller

Sarah Miller - Kennewick, WA

During 17 years of coaching the boys and girls tennis teams Sarah's teams have won numerous district and regional titles and two state team championships. She and the other coaches at Kamiakin High School have worked with an average of 120 players each spring. As a School Tennis Coordinator for the USTA/PNW she has worked with physical educators to develop tennis programs for elementary and middle schools in her community.

Sarah's secret for managing successful practices: Flexibility and well organized practice plans. Her advice for coaches with limited tennis expertise is to ask questions, attend coaches' workshops and observe area tennis professionals and experienced coaches.
