Tucson, Ariz. --- Kat Savoy, who has previously captained 2.5 level ladies teams in Howard County, Md., wanted to captain a 2.5 Mixed Doubles team, but was never able to find enough players to fill out a full roster. When she was introduced to the Custodio siblings earlier this year, not only was she able to have a full team, but that group has now reached this weekend’s USTA 2.5 Mixed Doubles National Championships.

Arian Custodio
and his siblings had not played competitive tennis until this year, when Arian was influenced by his fiancé to start playing. He is engaged to Genevieve Gramatica, whom he met in college at Penn State University and has been involved in tennis throughout her life.

She competed collegiately for the Nittany Lions and currently is an assistant coach for the women’s tennis team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She also a USTA League Coordinator at the Green Spring Racquet Club in Lutherville, Md. and was influential in helping to put this team together. Additionally, she is the daughter of Nestor Gramatica, who was a three-time National Singles Champion in Thailand, and is a former member of the Thailand Davis Cup team.

The five Custodio siblings were born in the Philippines and moved to Maryland when they were young. The four youngest siblings are competing this weekend at Nationals, including Arian and his brothers Ace and Almond, and sister Niezle. Almond and Niezle also attended Penn State, and there is a very strong bond within the family.

With some coaching from Genevieve, the siblings have all quickly taken to tennis and practice at least twice per week. The whole team has expressed how much fun they have had playing and practicing tennis together.

"This experience has been amazing," Kat said. "It has been so much fun to captain this team, and to have such a great group of people. The growth that the team has shown this season is exponential and has been incredible. Working with Genevieve has also been very helpful."

In addition to the Custodio family, the team also features husband and wife combo, John and Leigh Grohe.

Family is very important amongst the members of this team representing the Mid-Atlantic section, and the team has quickly evolved into its own mini family over the course of the year that they have played together.
