A native of Northern California, John Togasaki has been playing or working in tennis in some capacity since he was a young kid.     The pandemic was a challenging time for everyone, but amid all of the uncertainty, one local Northern California tennis club was able to restore a sense of community throughout. Woodland Tennis Club had a full treasury and was one of the only clubs to have open courts, so they decided to establish the Woodland Tennis Club Youth Scholarship Committee to offer scholarships to the youth of Woodland to increase the number of student-age kids that are exposed to tennis and develop their skills.     Coming off a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined from competition for the second half of 2019, Northern California’s Mackenzie (Mackie) McDonald was healed and ready to hit the ground running in 2020. He started the year returning to the tour ready to find a good rhythm and build back the momentum he had going pre-injury. Then came the global Coronavirus pandemic putting a pause on everything. But after months with no sports, tennis is back!   • The BNP Paribas Tri-Level Team Championship event took place Oct. 25-27th at Diamond Hills Sports Club and Spa in Oakley. Tri-Level consist of teams playing three lines in order of strength at the 4.5, 4.0 &3.5 level. Thirtythree teams came together this year for the annual event. Read More

    Giuliana Olmos is a professional tennis player ranked 349 in the world in singles and 65 in the world doubles. A 26 years old Fremont native, Giuliana played for the University of Southern California in college before going on the pro circuit for the last four years. The oldest of three girls, tennis has been a common thread as both her sisters, Sarah and Zoe also play tennis. A common ground for the family, the sisters talk about what tennis has meant to them and how tennis fits in their lives. Read More

  • After the seniors, it was the Super-Seniors’ turn to battle it out on the court in Umag, Croatia for a shot at the World Team title. From September 15-20, three NorCal players represented the section at the highest level when they competed at the 39th ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships. A regular on Team U.S.A, San Francisco resident Geoff Cykman joined teammate Gary Jenkins, Mark Meyers and Tom Smith to form the U.S.A. Team competing in the Britannia Cup for the Men’s 65 & Over. Cykman and his teammates were undefeated in the round robin, beating Hungary and Poland 3-0. In the 1st-7th playoff match, Team U.S.A. ran into a very strong French team, stopping them in their run 3-0. France eventually went on to win the competition. But Geoff and the rest of Team U.S.A. bounced back in the playoff match to overcome Australia 2-0, coming home with an exciting third place medal. Read More
  • The USTA’s US Open Series event, Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, scorched through San Jose in a hot week, both on and off the courts. Our Membership booth was set up all week where spectators could stop for information about programming, get an autograph from an awesome player, test their serve’ speed or do some cool social media stunts.   • Taking place in Estoril/Lisbon, Portugal from August 4-10, 2019, the ITF Seniors Team World Championships once again didn’t disappoint. Two NorCal players were selected to represent Team USA. A veteran at the World Championships, Dan Gill of San Jose, CA, helped his team get out of its group in the Fred Perry Cup (M50). The four-man team composed of Dana, Eoin Collins, Willie Alumbaugh and Greg Paukstis beat Argentina and Bolivia 3-0 to make their way into the 1st-8th Playoff draw. There, the U.S. Team couldn’t hold the Italians, who earned their semifinal spot 2-1. In the 5th-6th playoff match, Dana and his teammates came across a very strong Belgium team that won 3-0. However, in their last match, Team U.S.A. finished on a high note, overcoming Germany 2-1 to take 7th place. Read More
  • The Adult 70 & Over league consisted of 40 teams and 504 players, spread out in the Men’s 6.0 category, Women’s 6.5, Men’s and Women’s 7.0 category, as well as Men’s and Women’s 8.0. The Sectional Championships crowned two winners, but other teams won their respective flights. Captained by Sue Nakayama, the Women’s 6.5 out Morgan Hill Tennis Club, the Women’s 7.0 from Millbrae Racquet Club captained by Sylvia Jackson, and the Women’s 8.0 team from Rio Del Mar, captained by Gay Finch, were all victorious of their flights.   • The NTRP National Championships crowned winners in men’s and women’s singles and doubles divisions over two weekends in late March and early April. The 18 & Over singles and doubles divisions took place respectively Friday, March 29 - Sunday, March 31, 2019 and Friday, April 5 - Sunday, April 7, 2019 at Academia Sanchez-Casal in Naples, FL, while the 50 & Over divisions were played those same weekends at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, AZ.   • “Sectionals is the greatest bonding experience for us,” Rohan Lageweg, the UC Berkeley Gold captain said enthusiastically. On a sunny and warm weekend, 24 teams and 200 students gathered at Stanford University to compete in the Tennis on Campus Sectional Championship. This event, held at the Stanford Taube Stadium, determined who would be representing NorCal at the 2018-2019 National Championships in Surprise, AZ, in April, 2019. Read More
  • Talking on the phone with Katie Volynets, it was apparent the excitement of her victory hadn’t worn off yet a couple days after. Granted, she had a great reason to be happy. The Walnut Creek resident had just realized her lifelong dream: qualifying for the main draw of the US Open. On Sunday, August 11, the 17-year-old defeated Charleston’s Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-4 to win the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18 National Hard Court Championship. Thanks to that win, Katie earned a Wild Card into the US Open main draw. Read More

    On August 10-11, 36 teams and 190 players gathered in Fresno, CA, to crown the section champions in the Same Gender 12U, 15U, and 18U Intermediate and Advanced divisions. Over the two days, players enjoyed cooler than usual 90 degree weather to battle for the section champions. For all of the 15U and 18U divisions, teams competed for a chance to represent NorCal in the Gar Glenney Cup against Team SoCal. Read More
