ITA Summer Circuit
The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of eight regional circuits (East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas and West) consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana in August.
These events are a great stepping stone for our juniors as well as competitive opportunities for our competitive adults. This circuit is of great value to our section as it provides back to back events for a month a top level competition. These events create much needed opportunities for more local ‘semi-pro competition’ for our Collegiate, Junior as well as Adult Open players.
The ITA Sumer Circuit brings together groups of players that would normally not connect due to certain age based events or programs with age restriction. Also this circuit provides an advancement opportunity as the men’s and women’s circuit winner progress on to Indiana University for the national playoff event in August.
Nearly 30,000 men and women have competed in ITA Summer Circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit provides college players, as well as juniors, adults and alumni players the opportunity to compete in organized events. For NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; therefore anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.
NorCal’s Collegiate Varsity Committee (CVC) lead by Chair Ryan Redondo is focused on creating increased awareness for junior players about College Tennis opportunities – thus supporting the American Pathway. The ITA Summer Circuit has been a focal point for the CVC as juniors will be playing on college campuses, competing with and against college players, and will have the opportunity to play in front of college coaches who are serving as our Circuit Tournament Directors.
Opportunity to continue to institute the Junior Council principles and pilot ‘level based play’ in NorCal. The ITA has agreed to allow any Tournament Director to have their event be level based – and organized according to the Universal Tennis Ratings.
UC Davis Head Mens Coach Eric Steidmayer is our Circuit Director and has played a huge leadership role in launching such a successful circuit. Eric, Ryan, the CVC and USTA NorCal hope to boost attendance and participation at these events. Remember these are “OPEN” level based events, all ages are welcome.
