Challenger tournaments (previously known as Zonal Area Tournaments) are the first level of competitive tournaments that count towards a USTA Texas Ranking. For 12s-18s divisions, players ages 11-18 are eligible to compete. Challenger-level players will no longer have a limit on the number of Challenger tournaments they can play each month.
Rankings will still be calculated by using a player’s top 4 Challengers point totals within a 12 month period. With the addition of 1-Day Challenger events in April 2016, point totals from both 1-Day and 2-Day Challengers will be considered when calculating rankings.
For 12s-18s divisions, there are two types of Challenger tournaments which utilize a point system to qualify players for advancement to the Championship level:
Challenger 2-Day – previously known as the traditional ZAT; uses the standard format and point table
Challenger 1-Day – new form of Challenger tournament; uses a shortened format and an adjusted point table
- Size: Tournaments are limited to 150 players due to COVID-19 local restrictions and court availability
- Type: Singles with First Match Loser Consolation (FMLC)
- Draw Format: Draws can vary on size depending upon number of applicants per age group
- Player Selection: The first 150 players to complete registration are in (first come, first served). This 150 is inclusive of 10 and Under players if 10 and Under event is scheduled to take place on the first day of the tournament. If 10 and under is scheduled for the second day of the tournament there could be 150 players in 12-18’s and 150 players in 10 and under. Challenger tournament registration will open on Monday, October 26 at 12:01am.
Note: You will notice that your credit card will not be charged until the tournament registration has closed and the Player Selection process is completed. Challenger 10-18’s players limited to have an active registration in one Challenger at a time per weekend of competition (Example: Player registered for a Challenger on the 1st weekend cannot register for another Challenger on the 1st weekend in the month of November without withdrawing from the original Challenger). Challenger 12-18’s players can only play in 2 Challenger tournaments in the month of November, Challenger 10 and under players can only play in 1 Challenger in the month of November. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL MAKE YOU INELIGIBLE AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN ANY EVENTS DURING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. No late entries will be accepted.
