By the numbers: 2022 U.S. Billie Jean King Cup Finals team

Victoria Chiesa | November 07, 2022

GLASGOW, Scotland -- It all comes down to this: The U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team is four matches away from being crowned world champions. Danielle Collins, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Caty McNally and Taylor Townsend will compete at the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbrdge Finals at the Emeriates Arena in Glasgow this week with the goal of winning it all.

The first order of business is two group stage matches. The U.S. starts its campaign against Poland on Wednesday and will then the Czech Republic on Friday hoping to advance to the weekend's knockout rounds.

Here's all you need to know about captain Kathy Rinaldi's team, by the numbers.

19: The U.S. is bidding to win its 19th all-time title at the Billie Jean King Cup and its 31st final. Both are the most of any country in history. Fellow 2022 Finals competitors the Czech Republic (11 titles, 5 as Czechoslovakia) and Australia (7 titles) round out the most succesful teams in Billie Jean King Cup play.

5: Team USA arrives in Glasgow five years removed from its last Billie Jean King Cup title, won in 2017.

7: The U.S. is currently ranked No. 7 in the Billie Jean King Cup rankings, behind Australia, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Canada.

1: McNally was named to the team Monday after Jessica Pegula withdrew. She's the only first-time selection on Rinaldi's team this year, though Gauff has never played a match. (She was selected for the qualifying round against Latvia in 2020, but did not play.)

82: Gauff and McNally hope to join 82 other players who've officially suited up for a Billie Jean King Cup match in U.S. history.

3: The U.S. boasts three players who've won the junior Billie Jean King Cup. Gauff, Townsend and McNally, and Czech Marketa Vondrousova, are the only players competing in Glasgow who've won the junior version of the competition in their careers. Townsend triumphed with Gabrielle Andrews and Louisa Chirico in 2012, while McNally won with Amanda Anisimova and Whitney Osuigwe in 2017. Gauff led the 2018 team to victory alongside Connie Ma and Alexa Noel.

2: Gauff is the only teenager on the U.S. team, and one of just two in the competition on a whole. (The other is 15-year-old Slovak rookie Renata Jamrichova, the world's 33rd-ranked junior.) Though it's her second nomination, Gauff will likely play matches for the first time; she never took the court in the 2020 Qualifier vs. Latvia held in Everett, Wash.

2015: Townsend has been named to the team for the first time in seven years. In 2015, she made her debut in doubles against Argentina that year when the tie was already decided; she and CoCo Vandeweghe's 6-2, 6-3 triumph put a bow on a 4-1 U.S. victory in Buenos Aires. She figures to play a crucial role in the U.S.'s doubles this time around after she and McNally finished as runners-up at the US Open, and she reached the Roland Garros semifinals with Keys.

6: Keys has the most Billie Jean King Cup experience of any of Rinaldi's players in Glasgow, though she's only played six prior ties in her career since making her 2014 debut. She hasn't played Billie Jean King Cup since 2019, and did not feature on any of the team's in the U.S.'s last title-winning campaign.

4: 2022 Australian Open finalist Collins is unbeaten in singles in Billie Jean King Cup play. She's 4-0 in her career, with three of those victories coming in last year's Finals in Prague.

9: The U.S. has a history of success against its Group D opponents with a combined record of 9-1. The U.S. boasts a 4-0 all-time record against Poland and is 5-1 against the Czech Republic since the country's independence in 1993. The U.S's first tie against an independent Czech Republic was a 4-0 victory in 1994.

13: In those four ties against Poland, the U.S. has never lost a match to the tune of a perfect 13-0 record. In 2016, the U.S. won a World Group II first-round tie 4-0 in the competition's old format, and also recorded 3-0 wins in 1974, 1980 and 1990.

Tennis Channel will provide complete live coverage of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals from Nov. 8-13. The U.S. is guaranteed two round-robin matches. The Americans will play Poland on Nov. 9, not before 11 a.m. ET; and the Czech Republic on Nov. 11, not before 11:30 a.m. ET.
