Desirae Krawczyk qualifies for WTA Finals in doubles for second straight year

Victoria Chiesa | October 20, 2022

American Desirae Krawczyk is headed to the season-ending WTA Finals for the second year in a row. The 28-year-old Arizona State University alumna and her Dutch partner Demi Schuurs officially qualified for the field on Thursday as the seventh team of eight who'll make it.

Krawczyk is the third American to qualify for the field in 2022. She joins Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, who'll compete in both singles and doubles as a pair, in Forth Worth. A fourth American, Nicole Melichar-Martinez, and her Australian partner Ellen Perez are currently in the hunt for the eighth and final spot; the pair will qualify for Fort Worth unless the Kazakh-Brazilian pair of Anna Danilina and Beatriz Haddad Maia, the Australian Open finalists, reach the final at the Guadalajara Open Akron in Mexico this week.

Krawczyk and Schuurs reached two finals in 2022 after beginning their partnership in earnest at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in March; they triumphed at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and finished as runners-up at the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open in back-to-back weeks during the clay-court season.

Consistency was a hallmark of the pair's season; they reached two further semifinals at WTA 1000 events, the Internazionali BNL d'Italia (Rome) and the Western & Southern Open (Cincinnati), as well as two semifinals at WTA 500 tournaments—the Toray Pan Pacific Open (Tokyo) and the San Diego Open—and the WTA 250 Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. They also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open.

Krawczyk also captured her fourth career mixed doubles Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, as she and Neal Skupski defended the title they first won last year. She cracked the Top 10 in the doubles rankings for the first time in July at a career-best No. 10.

Krawczyk and her then-partner, Chile's Alexa Gaurachi, were eliminated in the round-robin stage of last year's WTA Finals in Guadalajara. She and Schuurs will look to better that result when they join reigning champions Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova; Gabriela Dabrowski and Giuliana Olmos; Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko; Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens; Gauff and Pegula; and Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan in this year's field.

The 2022 WTA Finals, which are returning to U.S. soil for the first time since they were held in Los Angeles from 2002-05, will be held at the Dickies Arena from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7.
