Pegula to join Gauff on U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team for April qualifying round

Victoria Chiesa | February 22, 2023

The United States' two best players will don the red, white and blue in April for Billie Jean King Cup. World No.3 Jessica Pegula will join world No.6 Coco Gauff on the U.S. team for April's qualifying tie against Austria, which will be held at the Delray Beach Tennis Center in Delray Beach, Fla. from April 14-15.

Tickets for the tie are on sale now via Ticketmaster, and are available for as low as $25 per day. Single- and two-day ticket packages are available.

Ranked a career-high No.3 this week, Pegula would be the highest-ranked player to compete for the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team since then-world No. 1 Serena Williams suited up against Italy on the road in Brindisi in 2015. Should they maintain their rankings come April, Pegula and Gauff together would give the U.S. team its highest-ranked tandem in 18 years. In 2005, then-No. 1 Lindsay Davenport and then-No. 4 Williams featured for a U.S. squad that defeated Belgium, also at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

Pegula has made two prior appearances for the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team, including in a 3-2 win against Ukraine in the 2022 qualifying round in Asheville last April. Pegula went 2-1 in that tie as the Americans' No. 1 player, and she and Asia Muhammad won the fifth and deciding doubles match to earn the U.S. victory.

The full U.S. team will be named by March 13, and will consist of either four or five players in all. The Qualifier is a best-of-five match tie that begins Friday, April 14, with two singles matches. The two reverse singles matches and a doubles match will follow on Saturday, April 15, with an abridged Saturday schedule possible if one nation clinches victory in the third or fourth singles match.

The winner of the qualifying tie will advance to November's Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals at a to-be-announced location. The U.S. has won a record 18 Billie Jean King Cup titles all-time.
