The United States is the leader in Olympic tennis medals since the sport was reinstated as a medal Olympic event in 1988. The U.S. has won 14 Olympic gold medals, and a record 24 in total, in men’s and women’s tennis in the past 28 years.

The Olympic tennis competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games included 64-player draws for both men’s and women’s singles, 32-team draws for men’s and women’s doubles, and 16-teams in mixed doubles, which were taking place for the second Games in a row after returning to the London Games for the first time since 1924.

The 2016 Olympic tennis event took place at the Olympic Tennis Center in the Rio Olympic Park, located in the Barra Cluster, and ran from Aug. 6-14.

Team USA won three tennis medals in Brazil. Olympic debutants Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock won a gold medal in the mixed doubles, beating Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram in a high-quality, all-American final, 6-7, 6-1, [10-7].

"This is probably going to be at the top [of career accomplishments]," said Mattek-Sands. "This is my first Olympics, first time being selected. I'm super proud of myself for my Grand Slam titles, but I think the Olympics is a different category altogether."

Sock walked away from Rio with two medals, having clinched a bronze earlier in the week in men’s doubles with Steve Johnson. He is the only tennis player at this year's Olympics to win two medals.

"The victory was pretty special and pretty surreal," Sock told rio.itftennis.com. "Definitely a moment we'll never forget and something we'll always share together."

The medal was the first of any kind for Mattek-Sands and Ram, both of whom were first-time Olympians, as was Sock. Meantime, Venus added the silver in mixed doubles to the gold medal she won in singles in 2000 and golds she won in women's doubles with sister Serena in 2000, 2008 and 2012.

"It's been an amazing experience, five Olympics for me," said Williams. "It's surreal every time I think about that I even came out with any hardware at all."

The 2016 U.S. Olympic team also included Serena Williams, who, alongside Venus, has won four Olympic gold medals, more than any other American tennis player in history. Rounding out the team were first-time Olympians Brian Baker, Denis Kudla, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys, who advanced to the women's singles semifinals and narrowly missed out on a bronze.

Eligibility for Olympic tennis includes world rankings and whether a player has made him or herself available to participate in the International Tennis Federation’s international team events—Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup—during the current Olympiad.
