The Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) announced today that Hawaii's very own Shelby Baron has been named PTR Wheelchair Professional of the Year. Baron is a graduate of Punahou School and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa for a couple of years before transferring to the University of Alabama on a wheelchair tennis scholarship.

At age 24, Baron, a 2016 Paralympian, already has a long list of accomplishments.  She took home her third National collegiate team title at the 2018 Wheelchair Tennis Collegiate National Championships. The Honolulu native placed second in her singles flight, earning four points for her team and helping the University of Alabama edge ahead to take the trophy.

Often seen playing on the ITF circuit, Baron has been ranked as high as singles #24 and #20 in Doubles. ADVERTISEMENT At the end of last year, she won the Alabama Open ITF Futures event, taking home the Doubles win and was the Singles Finalist.  Baron has represented the USA at the ITF World Team Cup and is working toward the making the next Paralympic team.

With this award, Shelby will be joining famed pros including, David Hall, Randy Snow, Rich Berman, Geoff Norton, Dan James, Paul Walker and others, who have received this honor. She will be recognized at the PTR International Tennis Symposium in South Carolina next month.

Congratulations, Shelby! Hawaii is so proud of you.
