Ready For League Nationals
Excitement is in the air! USTA League National Championships are back and teams from all 17 sections are gearing up for weekends of competition and fun.
Here in the Mid-Atlantic, the journey to nationals was fierce. Teams played their way through local leagues, Regional Championships, and Sectional Championships with the goal of winning an opportunity to represent the Section in national events in Arizona, Florida and Oklahoma. Ultimately, 36 teams from around the region advanced to the National League Championships.
As exhilarating as the road to nationals has been for everyone, winning teams didn’t just show up with racquet in hand, and start playing. For every moment played in a match, players put in hours of preparation for regionals and sectionals.
How teams get ready for competition is as varied as the sneakers they wear on the court.
Danielle Davis from Loudoun County, Virginia said she “took lots of lessons” from her coach. Team captain and player Logan Gruhl of Richmond, Virginia, had his team participating in weekly team practices and off-court team building activities. According to Logan “It is equally important to prepare off the court as a team, as it is on the court.” Ester Wang of Howard County, Maryland would agree. Her team hung out together and enjoyed the moment of what the team accomplished.
No matter what shape preparations took, being ready for a match is a key to success as teams advance and take on more variety of competition.
Now that 36 squads have won sectionals, rest assured that they are prepared, pumped up, and ready to hit the courts at Nationals. Kenny Callender of Washington, D.C. sums it up, “all the guys are excited to go to nationals. Arizona is going to be exciting!”
USTA Mid-Atlantic congratulates all Mid-Atlantic league participants for a season well played. We celebrate the teams that advanced to the League National Championships and wish them the best of luck and will be cheering every team and player on! We are #MidAtlanticProud.
