CTA Spotlight: Hamtramck

September 14, 2022

Hamtramck Community Tennis Association

Location and USTA Midwest District:
Hamtramck, MI | Southeastern Michigan

Brief History of Organization:

The Hamtramck Community Tennis Association (HCTA) is brand new with a mission to grow tennis for everyone within the city and surrounding areas. Hamtramck is surrounded by the City of Detroit and has one of the most diverse populations in the United States.

Hamtramck was once a very well-known tennis city during the 1940s and into the 1970s when Jean and Jerry Hoxie started the first “tennis academy” in the U.S. and produced an incredible amount of tennis talent. The HCTA has been leveraging that history to help bring tennis back to life in the Hamtramck area.

HCTA had more than 60 youth and adults participating in a month-long program this summer. Dichondra Johnson of the Hamtramck Parks Conservancy and Craig Daniels of the City of Hamtramck, along with Greg Kowalski of the Historic society and a private group of Hoxie enthusiasts have made a long-term commitment to the growth and development of the program and facility.

Programs and Services Offered:

HCTA is focused on entry level tennis for youth and adults. The association offers a month-long program with two-day a week participation as its inaugural kick off. HCTA has been pleased with its turnout and the level of instruction and support students were given. HCTA is striving to grow its base so it can really improve its facility in scope and size and bring back tennis to the schools and fill up the courts!

Proudest Moment/Most Exciting Event:

When you see the face of excited children having fun moving around and learning a great sport, there is no better feeling then that! HCTA has made some small improvements with the facility, adding some nets and posts, but just the fact that people can go out and play is rewarding.

What Is One Thing You Want Everyone To Know About Your CTA:

It is bold to even attempt to revive a tennis program in one of America's most famous tennis cities. HCTA is humbled to even play a small part in this project. The association wants everyone to know about the great, rich history of tennis in Hamtramck and that HCTA is doing its best to bring tennis back.

One of HCTA’s greatest assets is two of its instructors Brian Antecki and Myles Geloneck. Antecki is a United States Professional Tennis Association professional, and Geloneck attended USTA Southeastern Michigan’s coaches training early in the summer. Both have added enthusiasm and excitement to the program and the participants have loved them!

How Can The USTA Continue To Support Your Organization:

The Midwest Section and Southeastern Michigan District have been nothing but outstanding in supporting HCTA – from assistance with the Articles of Incorporation, insurance, bank accounts and many other resources. HCTA may look to transitioning to an NJTL program in the future and the USTA can be of help with that.

Tell Us About Any Upcoming Events or Promotions:
HCTA is going to offer a fall follow-up program at a charter school in Hamtramck.
