Robert Weber's Tennis Career Should Surprise Nobody

Andrea Gallagher | January 13, 2023

For 42-year old Robert Weber of Omaha, he was destined to become a tennis player.

“My dad was a teaching pro,” Weber said about his father, David Weber. “He built a court in the backyard and I grew up playing tennis there.”

Weber recently received a USTA Missouri Valley Adult Player of the Year (4.5 & above) for his stellar performance on the court. In 2021, he was on five teams and four of them made it to Nationals. In 2022, he was on one team and it went to Nationals and they placed second in the nation.

“I like competition a lot,” he said. “There’s a lot of different strategies that can be employed in tennis, and a lot of different ways to win. It’s a very versatile sport.”

Weber grew up in Omaha and attended Brownell-Talbot school where he played many sports including tennis. After he graduated, he moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa, but did not play tennis. After living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Los Angeles, California, where he taught tennis and worked on some television shows such as “The Price is Right” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” he moved back to Omaha.

He currently teaches at Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Center in Omaha and is also the varsity girls tennis coach at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart. Prior to that he also coached at Creighton Prep and at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

As far as his USTA play, he is definitely playing more doubles than he ever has before.

“I like singles the most, but I’ve gravitated more towards becoming a doubles player,” he said. “I’m a serve and volleyer, but in the last few years I’ve been playing a lot of doubles.”

He and his father have played numerous doubles tournaments together, and even won a gold ball tourney in Sarasota, Florida, in 2021. Robert also won a silver ball in 2022. David is in the Nebraska and South Dakota USTA Hall of Fames.

When he’s not playing tennis, Robert likes to write dark fantasy/horror fiction. He wrote one book in 2020 and has another coming out this year. He and his son enjoy playing sports, video games, listening to music and traveling together.
