January 07, 2022

Top juniors Nicolas Kotzen (18; Short Hills, N.J.) and Piper Charney (16; Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) each won both singles and doubles titles at last week’s USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s National Winter Championships.

The USTA National Winter Championships, one of five junior USTA National Championship events in 2021 that make up the USTA adidas Junior Championship Series, were held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., and the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz., with singles and doubles competition across the 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s age groups.

Kotzen, a high school senior, is committed to play college tennis at Columbia University, where his older brother Alex is currently a sophomore and a member of the men’s tennis team.

Nicolas Kotzen won the boys' 18 singles title at the USTA National Winter Championships.

The No. 23-seeded champion defeated Lucas Brown (17; Plano, Texas), the No. 18 seed, in the singles final, 7-5, 6-1.  Kotzen also partnered with Bjorn Swenson (18; North Oaks, Minn.) to win the doubles title, defeating Brown and partner Grant Lothringer (18; The Woodlands, Texas) in the final.

Piper Charney won the girls' 18s singles title at Winter Nationals.

Charney, a high school junior, is currently the top-ranked 16-and-under player in the country and is ranked amongst the top 18-and-under girls. She recently won the 16s doubles title at the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships.

At Winter Nationals, she defeated Katie Codd (17; Carlsbad, Calif.), a high school senior who is committed to play college tennis at Duke, in the final by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Charney swept the 18s titles, teaming up with Natalie Block (17; Plantation, Fla.) to defeat Ava Bruno (16; Bronxville, N.Y.) and Erin Ha (16; Tenafly, N.J.) in the girls’ doubles final.

Mitchell Lee (Oakland, Calif.) won the boys’ 16s singles title, defeating Andrew Ena (Rego Park, N.Y.), 6-1, 6-4, in the final, while the girls’ 16s singles title went to Taylor Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.), who knocked off Pearlie Zhang (Plainsboro, N.J.), 7-5, 6-3.

Finals results from the USTA National Winter Championships are below. The complete draws are available here.

Each year, more than 120,000 players compete in USTA junior tournaments. Players compete in levels of competition through earned advancement in the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s age divisions. USTA junior tournaments help kids take their game as far as they want – high school, college or the pros – or just have fun competing.
