Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25: March 23, 2022
In a season in which the men's No. 1 ranking has been a veritable carousel, what could be more appropriate than a tie at the top?
Two teams—TCU and Florida—share the men's No. 1 ranking in this week's Tennis Channel / USTA College Tennis poll, each earning 339 points from the panel of voters.
The reigning NCAA champion Gators return to No. 1 for the first time since the final poll of 2021, thanks to a 3-0 week at home, with resounding victories over Illinois, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. TCU, meanwhile, held serve vs. SMU and South Florida, and both programs perhaps owe their return to No. 1 to Michigan, which toppled previous No. 1 Ohio State as well as former No. 4 Baylor in consecutive matches to rise up to No. 4 itself.
The Ohio State women were also on the wrong end of an upset, falling to Georgia in Athens, which, along with a Bulldogs road win over Tennessee, vaulted Georgia from No. 10 up to No. 6. North Carolina, which is ranked No. 1 for the sixth week in a row, will face perhaps its biggest test in ACC play Friday as the Tar Heels travel to Coral Gables to face No. 13 Miami.
Each team's point total, specified below, is the sum of its ranking points from the USTA's panel of voters (listed below). Each voter ranked 25 teams from Nos. 1 to 25, with the first-place team receiving 25 points and the last-place team receiving one. For control, the highest and lowest outlying ranking for each team on the ballot was removed. First-place votes were not tallied. This week's poll includes 16 votes, making the maximum number of points available 350.
The 2022 voting panel includes votes from the following representatives: Casey Angle (former Intercollegiate Tennis Association Director of Championships); Virgil Christian (former USTA director of college tennis); Richard Croome (former journalist); Sonny Dearth (Daily Press; Newport News, Va.); Judy Dixon (former UMass women’s head coach); Alex Gruskin (Cracked Racquets); Chris Halioris / Matt Stachowiak (Cracked Racquets); J. Webb Horton (Former Florida Gulf Coast men's head coach); Granger Huntress (Texas College Tennis); Andy Katz (NCAA.com); Bobby Knight (College Tennis Today); Brandon Moglen (Tennis Channel); Lisa Stone (Parenting Aces); Caitlin Thompson (Racquet); Scott Treibly (USTA contractor); Laura Vallverdu (Between Lines); Dallas Oliver/Shannon Wrege (Tennis Recruiting Network).
