U.S. juniors capture silver medal at 2025 World Team Cup
The U.S. Junior Wheelchair team took home the silver medal after finishing runners-up at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup to conclude this year’s competition at the Ali Bey Club in Manavgat, Antalya, Turkey.
The American team of Max Wong (Flushing, N.Y.), Sabina Czauz (Thornton, Colo.), and Lucy Heald (Lookout Mountain, Ga.) had a great week in Turkey—they went undefeated in the round robin stage, then kept the unbeaten streak alive in the semifinals by beating Brazil (2-0) before falling to Great Britain, the only other undefeated team in the tournament, 2-0. American Wong lost to Ruben Harris, 6-7, 3-6, and Czauz lost 0-6, 3-6 to Lucas John De Gouvela.
The World Team Cup is the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) flagship wheelchair tennis event. The inaugural event in California in 1985 involved six men’s teams. The women’s competition began the following year, with quad and junior events introduced in 1998 and 2000, respectively. The event has experienced continued growth since.
In other action, the United States men’s team of Charlie Cooper (La Quinta, Calif.), Conner Stroud (Rutherfordton, N.C.) and Tomas Majetic (Boulder, Colo.) finished in seventh place, while the quad team of Andrew Bogdanov (Prescott, Ariz.), Eric Court (Laie, Hawaii) and David Wagner (Walla Walla, Wash./San Diego, Calif.) finished in sixth.
The USTA was officially designated by the USOPC as the national governing body for the Paralympic sport of wheelchair tennis in June 2002, becoming the first Olympic national governing body to earn this recognition.
As the national governing body for wheelchair tennis, the USTA manages wheelchair tennis in the United States, including the sanctioning of tournaments, overseeing wheelchair rankings, creating and managing a high-performance program for developing elite disabled athletes, and selecting teams to compete internationally for the United States.
