NEW ENGLAND TENNIS & EDUCATION FOUNDATION DONATES $15,000 TO THE NEWTON, MA COMMUNITY

Funds will support tennis programming and The Calculus Project within the school district

WESTBOROUGH, MA- New England Tennis & Education Foundation (NETEF) - the 501(c)(3) charitable arm of U.S. Tennis Association of New England - recently donated $15,000 to the Newton, MA community to support a robust mathematics program and the strong tennis community.

In a check ceremony on October 2nd, Jeff Novins, Executive Vice President of NETEF, presented a $10,000 check to Newton’s Mayor, Ruthanne Fuller. This money is allocated to support Friends of Newton Tennis’ efforts to improve the public courts in the city and increase access to all.

“This grant furthers NETEF’s mission of promoting the growth of tennis and increasing the opportunity for members of the community to play and enjoy the game of tennis,” said Novins.

Friends of Newton Tennis is a USTA Community Tennis Association that raises money for and helps to maintain the city’s tennis facilities. They also offer an extensive menu of tennis programs for residents and the general public. There are 67 public tennis courts within the city limits.

During the same ceremony, NETEF presented a $5,000 check to the Newton Schools Foundation. This money will support The Calculus Project and was accepted by Diana Fisher Gomberg, Board Member of the Newton Schools Foundation, and Chair for The Calculus Project Committee.

“We are thrilled to support The Calculus Project, which helps increase the number of Black, Latinx and low-income students who enroll in and successfully complete higher level math in high school. Education is a vital part of the work we do,” said Mary McKernan, President of New England Tennis and Education Foundation.

The Calculus Project in Newton currently serves 150 students in grades 8-12. It helps students build their math skills and confidence. Both donations were made in memory of Dr. Isadore Singer, world-renowned MIT Mathematician and devoted tennis player, who was a longtime resident of Newton.

“Dr. Singer’s accomplishments in the field of mathematics will inspire our students here in Newton. And as a professor who supported generations of students in their exploration of very high-level math, I think this gift, made in his name, would make him smile,” said Fisher Gomberg.

The donation will help Newton Public Schools to provide The Calculus Project to the increasing numbers of students who would like to participate. It will also help NPS to fulfill its commitment to continue supporting every Calculus Project 8th grader for a full 5 years until high school graduation.
