MN PTR Pro of the Year

Christine Nickels, of St. Louis Park, Minn., has been named Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Member of the Year for the state of Minnesota. This award is presented to a PTR member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR. She earned PTR certifications in 10 & Under and Adult Development, and has been coaching a Special Olympics tennis team in Minneapolis for the past five years. She will be honored during the 2018 PTR International Tennis Symposium February 13-16, on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Nickels is the Assistant Executive Director and Director of Education and Partnerships at the Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center (The Fort) in St. Paul, Minn. The Fort is a public indoor tennis facility and youth development nonprofit that brings together individuals of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, to embrace the lifelong game of tennis with an emphasis on providing accessible and high quality enrichment programs for under-resourced youth.
Prior to joining The Fort, Nickels was the Director of Community Tennis for USTA Northern, where she was a key member of the leadership team and oversaw efforts to provide resources and support to community tennis programs, including grants, public facility assistance, organizational development, advocacy, diversity and inclusion, coach education, school tennis and junior teams programming. She came to USTA Northern in 2005, after completing an internship at the Minnesota Women’s Golf Association.
A graduate from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a degree in exercise and sports science, Nickels a member of the women’s tennis team. In 2014, she completed the Mini-MBA for Nonprofits course offered through University of St. Thomas Executive Education and volunteers her time with several local nonprofits including the Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership, Sports Alliance of Minnesota, Positive Coaching Alliance, and Hammer.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 125 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
