ALAMEDA, Calif. — June 20, 2019 — Six teams captured titles at the 2019 USTA Northern California Adult 65 & Over League Section Championships June 17-19, in the Oakley area. The Women’s 6.0 division season culminated during the league playoff with a 2-1 win. The championships brought together the top 35 teams with over 400 players of various ability levels throughout Northern California. The host site was Diamond Hills Sports Club & Spa, in Oakley, CA. Men’s 6.0 Division: 

The Walnut Creek team representing the Walnut Creek Racquet Club battled the team from Sunnyvale to secure its title against the Sunnyvale Tennis Center.

The 18-person team is captained by Daniel Katzman and co-captained by Michael Bloomstein, and plays at the Walnut Creek Tennis Center.

 

Men’s 7.0 Division:

The Gold River team representing Gold River Sports Club finished their season with only one loss all year to take the title home. 

The 16-person team is captained by Thomas Schauer and co-captained by Erin Heieck.

 

Men’s 8.0 Division:

The Fairfield team representing the In-Shape Fairfield Rancho Solano overcame teams from Fresno, Berkeley, Fremont and Sunnyvale to finish in first place.  

The 14-person team is captained by Michael Fischer and co-captained by Mark Hansen.

 

Men’s 9.0 Division:

The Santa Rafael team representing Mcinnis Park Tennis Complex fought hard to secure the title, winning five matches out of six. 

The 13-person team is captained by Daniel Grossman.

 

Women’s 6.0 Division:

The Sunnyvale team representing the Sunnyvale Tennis Club overcame the tough team from Morgan Hill and Los Gatos to be crowned section champion. 

The 15-person team is captained by Marcia West and co-captained by Irene Wong and plays at the Sunnyvale Municipal Tennis Center.

 

Women’s 7.0 Division:

The San Carlos team representing the San Carlos Tennis Club went 4-1 during the playoff season to be crowned section champion. 

The 15-person team is captained by Judy Prothro and co-captained by Louise Tierney and plays at Arguello Park.

 

Women’s 8.0 Division:

The Gold River team representing the Gold River Sports Club beat teams from Aptos and Marin to claim the title. 

The 15-person team is captained by Gerry Grichuhin.

 

USTA League was established 37 years ago to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 sections. USTA League groups players by using six NTRP levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
