EIGHT TEAMS CROWNED SECTION CHAMPIONS AT USTA LEAGUE ADULT 55 AND OVER SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

ALAMEDA, Calif. — September 26, 2017 — Eight teams captured titles at the 2017 USTA Northern California Adult 55 & Over League Section Championships this past weekend in the Sacramento area. The championships brought together the top 90 teams with more than 1,000 players of various ability levels throughout Northern California. The matches consisted of three doubles lines and each team competed in round robin flights.

 

Men’s 6.0 Division:

The team representing the Walnut Creek Racquet Club, beat teams from Sunnyvale, Mill Valley, Napa Valley, and Oakland to secure its title.

The 14-person team is captained by Alan Roth, and plays at the Walnut Creek Tennis Center.

 

Men’s 7.0 Division:

The team representing Pinole Park only lost two points all weekend to take the title home.

The 14-person team is captained by Albert Chu and co-captained by Brandon Chu.

 

Men’s 8.0 Division:

The team representing the Sierra Sport Racquet Club, went undefeated all season through the Section Championships to win the title.  

The 13-person team is captained by William Hancock and is located in Fresno, CA.

 

Men’s 9.0 Division:

The team representing the Pleasanton Tennis and Community Park battled through teams from Los Gatos, Fresno, Truckee, and Mountain View to claim the title.

The 20-person team is captained by Mark Wagner and co-captained by Jeffrey Heely.

 

Women’s 6.0 Division:

The team representing the Antelope Community Tennis Association went undefeated during the Section Championships to secure its title.

The 15-person team is captained by Michelle Weeks and co-captained by Cynthia Fuog, and plays at the Antelope Community Park.

 

Women’s 7.0 Division:

The team representing the Spanish Bay Club also swept the competition to be crowned section champions.

The 10-person team is captained by Kirstie Wilde and co-captained by Diane Brubaker.

 

Women’s 8.0 Division:

The team representing the Pleasanton Tennis and Community Park came back strong after losing their first match to clinch the title.

The 15-person team is captained by Teresa King.

 

Women’s 9.0 Division:

The team representing the Sunnyvale Municipal Tennis Center only lost one match all season to qualify for the USTA League National Championships.

The 18-person team is captained by Paula Moser and co-captained by Cynthia Zirpolo.

 

USTA League was established 37 years ago to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 sections. USTA League groups players by using six NTRP levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
