Modesto Celebrates 3rd Annual USTA NorCal H.I.T.S. Season

ALAMEDA, CA, October 25, 2016 – More than 150 kids under 10 will be introduced to the sport of tennis at Tuesday’s USTA NorCal Jamboree. The Modesto School District will celebrate its third annual youth tennis season at the event held at the Sportsmen of Stanislaus (SOS) Club.

The USTA program, H.I.T.S., works with students under the age of 10 to focus on Honesty, Inspiration, Teamwork, Sportsmanship.

To kick off the upcoming season, USTA NorCal and Modesto Schools organized a Jamboree for more than 150 students who will participate in the district’s third season. During the afternoon event, the children will be participating in drills, learning how to hit tennis balls, playing organized games and learning valuable life skills.

Most of the students participating in Modesto’s tennis program are from underserved communities. “Many of these students haven’t had access to programs like this and it may be their first experience with tennis,” said Steven Hurst, ASES Program Administrator for the Modesto School District. “Working with NorCal USTA, we hope to get them very excited for the upcoming season.”

“Two years ago, Modesto introduced H.I.T.S. at eight schools in the district in 2014. This year, 19 schools are participating,” said USTA NorCal Tennis Representative, Christy Perez.

“H.I.T.S. ties in well with our character education class,” added Mr. Hurst. “Instead of talking about it, these kids get a chance to experience character building through tennis.” The program is aimed at children in the third grade specifically, he explained. “Almost no program or activity was focused to this age group.” After last year’s successful Jamboree, he said, “the kids remembered me from tennis and showed great enthusiasm toward playing tennis after school.”
