Nearly 200 participants showed up on the 100 tennis courts at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, on April 20, 2018, with the goal of burning a combined 1 million calories during a massive Cardio Tennis session. This event was created to kickoff “Play Tennis Month,” which was designed by the USPTA and industry partners to promote the health benefits of tennis during the month of May.
The lead-up event was a huge success as players and non-players had a blast taking part in drills and games that saw them try to reach their goal of burning 1 million calories. “It was fantastic, everybody was running around, laughing, and having a great time while sweating,” USPTA Master Professional Rosie Bareis reported. Under the sun and humidity of Florida, players sweated away the calories in support of the USPTA Foundation and PHIT America. ADVERTISEMENT “The trained Cardio Tennis instructors did an amazing job making the participants run around while having fun.” This event was supported by the USPTA, TIA (Tennis Industry Association), USTA, and Tennis Channel who shot a segment on the Million Cardio Burn challenge. During the month of May, over 1,500 facilities will be participating in “Play Tennis Month” by offering thousands of tennis programs (Cardio Tennis sessions, Play Tennis Fast, Try Tennis Free, Pop Tennis on 60-Foot courts, etc…) and events for free throughout the U.S., along with hosting fundraisers. All proceeds will be donated to the USPTA Foundation and PHIT America GO! Grants, “which provide funds for physical education in schools, including supporting Net Generation equipment and curriculum,” as stated on addvantageuspta.com. On top of raising money and encouraging people to be active, one of the goals during “Play Tennis Month” will be for Americans to burn a combined 10 million calories on the tennis court.
To help facilitate the activities during “Play Tennis Month,” a provider webinar is scheduled for April 25. During that time, attendees will receive updates on the different formats used around the country, promotions, and any other important business regarding the implementation of “Play Tennis Month.” Lastly, May 5, will be National Cardio Tennis Day, with all the facilities registered offering Cardio Tennis challenges, sessions and programming.
