Katy Build Tennis Tournament raises money to build homes

Yvonne Bienvenu/USTA Louisiana | August 24, 2022

Bossier Tennis Center, in Bossier City, La., hosted the seventh annual Katy Build Tennis Tournament June 24-26.

Over the last seven years our tennis tournament has raised more than $275,000 for Katy Build projects honoring Katy Watkins, Molly Reed & Emily Perdue. The three local high school girls lost their lives a car accident in 2006. The teenagers impacted the community through their mission work, involvement in their churches and youth groups.

In 2011, Asbury United Methodist Church, Katy's church, began a partnership with Fuller Center for Housing of NWLA to build a home for a first-time veteran family. Since the first Katy Build home, the tournament has partnered with Molly & Emily's home churches and built five homes, including Molly & Emily Build houses in Bossier City.

The 2022 three-day event included a junior tournament as a part of Bossier City's junior development program. This year 55 juniors joined us for tourney play, a hit for prizes game, along with awards and dinner. The event raised $63,000.

The Katy Build Tennis Tournament was named the 2018 USTA Louisiana Charity Tournament of the Year.

During the tournament adult team matches began for the weekend on Friday night and continued through Sunday afternoon. The Katy Build weekend offers division play from tennis apprentice to women's, mixed and open teams, something for every level of play.

This year the tournament was also played by 315 adult players and 58 teams.

During the weekend there were several opportunities to raise funds for our future home builds, including hit for prizes, wine pull, silent auction, social passes sales in addition to registrations and sponsors.
