Boca Raton's Hurricane Tyra Black captured the Girls' 12s title at the 2013 Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship, on Dec. 23 turning around a difficult start to defeat No. 1-seeded Russian Anastasiya Potapova 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.

"She came out with a lot of confidence, and I didn't come out with that much confidence," Black said. "Then as the match went on, I started thinking I could do this."

Black's marathon triumph, played out over 2 hours, 43 minutes, added to a family legacy that now includes two Junior Orange Bowl champions and a runner-up. Half-sister Nicole Pitts won the Girls 14s title in 2000; sister Tornado Alicia Black fell short in upper division two years ago, losing to fellow Floridian Katerina Stewart.

For the youngest sibling, though, Monday was more about personal satisfaction.

"The family part doesn't really matter," Black said. "I really just wanted to come out and win this tournament for me."

In the semifinals Black rolled over No. 4 seed Amanda Anisimova of Hallandale 6-1, 6-0. Black retired against Anisimova two weeks ago when they met in the final of the Eddie Herr International Championships after injuring her hip in a fall.

The Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship has a rich history of bringing the world's most promising young players to Coral Gables, incl
uding former champs and participants Juan Martin del Potro, reigning Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, Andy Roddick, Caroline Wozniacki, Andre Agassi, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Monica Seles, Chris Evert, Jim Courier and Mary Joe Fernandez.
