Tennis Stars Duval, Townsend at Free Kids Play Day in Orlando; More

October 18, 2013 09:38 AM
Mylan_smash_hits_orlandoUSTA Florida and Mylan World TeamTennis will host a free Mylan WTT Smash Hits Kids Play Day, sponsored by Macy's, on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013 from 12:30-3 p.m. at Macy's Florida Mall in Orlando.

The event will feature U.S. up-and-coming tennis stars Vicky Duval and Taylor Townsend, who will speak with children and sign autographs prior to a tennis clinic. The first 100 children registered will receive a free junior racquet from Mylan WTT. Duval had a breakthrough performance at the 2013 US Open, while Townsend is the former No. 1-ranked junior girl in the world. Both played Mylan World TeamTennis this summer and are also participating in Mylan WTT Smash Hits later that evening.

Play Days provide kids and parents of all skill levels with the opportunity to experience tennis in a social and fun setting. The events are open to the public with an emphasis placed on family participation, effort and sportsmanship. Information will also be available on 10 and Under Tennis, Jr. Team Tennis leagues, other local play opportunities, and special free USTA memberships for qualifying participants.

The Play Day is in conjunction with Mylan WTT Smash Hits presented by GEICO, a charity night of tennis co-hosted by longtime friends Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King, featuring former world No. 1s Venus Williams and Andy Roddick on Sunday, Nov. 17 at the HP Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort. Other players include 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, John Isner, Duval and Townsend. Tennis action is set for 6 p.m. with the pre-match VIP Reception and Auction kicking off at 4:30 p.m. For ticket information, visit www.WTTSmashHits.com. The event has raised more than $11.5 million over the past two decades for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and local AIDS charities.
"For more than 20 years, Mylan WTT Smash Hits has been one of the most rewarding and meaningful events in tennis," King said when it was announced that the event was returning to the Orlando area for the first time since 1997. "Having both Venus and Andy as part of this year's event and returning to the Orlando area will help us continue the momentum we set with last year's record-breaking event."
For smaller children the Play Day event will utilize the USTA 10 and Under Tennis format, which allows kids to play tennis on smaller court sizes, with racquet sizes that fit their hands, foam and low-compression balls, a simple scoring system, all adjusted to ease kids into the sport. Similar mini-tennis formats have long been popular in Europe, where stars such as Roger Federer and Kim Clijsters first learned the game with age-adjusted racquets, balls and court sizes.

Macy's Florida Mall is located at 8001 S. Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando. To register to participate in the free Play Day go to http://smashhitsplayday.eventbrite.com.
